CV NEWS FEED // A conservative legal group is suing Democratic Washington State Gov. Jay Inslee over a deeply controversial pro-“trans” and pro-abortion law he signed in May.
From The Daily Wire:
America First Legal, led by former Trump adviser Stephen Miller, filed the lawsuit over Senate Bill 5599, which was recently signed into law by Inslee. The bill was pushed by leftist lawmakers as protection of trans-identifying youth and allows “host homes” to keep parents in the dark about their child’s sex-change procedure.
In a social media post announcing the lawsuit Wednesday, the legal group called S.B. 5599 a “‘state-sanctioned kidnapping’ bill that allows the state to hide kids from their parents to perform ‘gender transitions’ – including disfiguring drugs and mutilating surgeries.”
In a statement published the same day, Miller said his group is challenging a “sick, authoritarian law essentially allows the state to kidnap children from their parents and hide their whereabouts to surgically and chemically mutilate them.”
He also stated that the law seeks to “formally deprive” the parents of runaway minors “of any legal ability to stop the medical disfigurement of their sons and daughters by gender extremists targeting their children.”
As CatholicVote reported in May, S.B. 5599
specifically targets runaway minors whom doctors or state actors identify as “trans.” The Washington Times states that the bill “allows youth shelters and host homes to conceal from parents the whereabouts of their missing children” if administrators determine the minors are “trans,” which the new law deems to be a “protected health service.”
At the time, The Daily Wire added that the new law deems “abortion and transgender surgeries as ‘compelling reasons’ for licensed shelters and host homes not to notify parents if a runaway child is seeking such procedures. Instead, the shelters and facilities can inform the Department of Children, Youth, and Families.”
At his May 9 bill-signing ceremony, Inslee declared:
With this bill, Washington leads the way by taking a more compassionate, developmentally appropriate, and reasoned approach to support these youth as they access gender-affirming treatment and reproductive health care services.
Inslee is currently the longest-tenured governor in the country. Currently nearing the end of his third consecutive term, he was first elected on the same day as the 2012 presidential election. Just days before signing S.B. 5599, he announced that his current term would be his last.
Before winning his first term as governor, Inslee served in Congress for a combined 15 years.
Miller founded America First Legal in 2021 after serving concurrently as Senior Advisor to the President and White House Director of Speechwriting during President Trump’s entire four-year term. Miller is well-known for his hardline stance on immigration and for being one of the central figures behind the Trump administration’s border security policies.
On its website, the group states that it opposes “the radical left’s anti-jobs, anti-freedom, anti-faith, anti-borders, anti-police, and anti-American crusade.”
