CV NEWS FEED // According to a newly-released poll, more than six in ten independent voters would support deporting all or most of the illegal immigrants in the U.S.
The Reuters–Ipsos poll released Monday found that 61% of independent voters and 85% of registered Republicans polled “are in favor of deporting most or all of the illegal immigrants present in the United States,” The Daily Wire reported.
Overall, 56% of all respondents supported such a policy. Dragging this percentage down were Democrats, who proved to be outliers in relation to the rest of the electorate. Only 26% of registered Democratic voters polled were in favor of the deportations.
An April poll with a slightly differently-worded question found “a stunning 42% of Democrats” supported “the mass deportation of migrants illegally in the country,” CatholicVote reported last month:
The poll found that 51% – just over half – of the American general public supports mass deportations. While just over two-thirds (68%) of Republicans support this policy, significant minorities of independents (46%) and Democrats (42%) agree with it as well.
>> POLL: MAJORITY OF AMERICANS SUPPORT MASS DEPORTATIONS <<
In a writeup of its poll, Reuters seemed to downplay the fact that the vast majority of American voters support the deportation of all or most illegal migrants. The news source opted for a very different emphasis with the headline: “Half of Americans oppose immigrant detention camps.”
“Some 54% of registered voters opposed the use of detention camps while 36% supported such a move and 10% said they did not know or did not respond,” Reuters reported. “Still, 56% said most or all immigrants in the U.S. illegally should be deported.”
The Reuters article did not provide a clear definition for the term “detention camps.”
“The New York Times reported last year that former President Trump, if reelected, planned to build large camps to hold immigrants pending a possible deportation,” the article stated:
In an interview with Time Magazine published in April, Trump said he would consider using camps but that “there wouldn’t be that much of a need for them” because people would be rapidly deported.
Tom Homan, a former Trump immigration official who could join a second administration, said tents would be needed as more immigrants in the U.S. illegally are arrested and held for deportation, exceeding existing detention space.
