CV NEWS FEED // At an annual “pride” parade in New York City last week, marchers chanted “We’re here, we’re queer, we’re coming for your children.”
On June 23, hundreds of “drag queens” and other LGBTQ activists marched in a parade in Manhattan. The parade marked the beginning of NYC’s “pride weekend.”
The weekend commemorates the 1969 Stonewall Riots, known as a watershed moment for the gay movement in America. The Stonewall Inn was a gay bar where police frequently inspected and made arrests for lewd conduct. When the police showed up in June 1969, patrons fought against them.
Participants in Friday’s parade marched through NYC’s Tompkins Square Park and ended at Stonewall Inn, where the riots originally began in 1969.
Online videos show marchers chanting “We’re here, we’re queer, we’re coming for your children.”
The chant will likely draw comparisons to the July 2021 controversy when a gay men’s choir performed a song titled “We’re coming for your children” in San Francisco.
After the choir posted a video of members singing about converting children into champions of “justice” and “tolerance,” it faced backlash.
“You think that we’ll corrupt your kids, if our agenda goes unchecked,” sang one of the choir members. “Funny, just this once, you’re correct.”
“We’ll convert your children. Happens bit by bit. Quietly and subtly. And you will barely notice it,” the choir sang. “We’ll make them tolerant and fair.”
Protesters in New York last week also chanted, “We are here, we are queer, we are not going shopping,” a reference to the 1990s “Queer Nation” chant.
The radical organization aimed to normalize homosexuality by coming out publicly. Members visited bars and malls wearing T-shirts with slogans such as “Promote Homosexuality” and “Militant Dyke” and came out through “kiss-ins” and chants.
Members of the controversial drag group “The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence” attended Friday’s march. When the Los Angeles Dodgers honored the anti-Catholic group at the team’s annual LGBTQ pride event in mid-June, both the team and the trag troupe received national backlash.
The activist group, which engages in “satirical” performances and fundraises for LGBTQ causes, calls itself a “leading-edge Order of queer and trans nuns.”The team presented the group with an award an hour before the game in front of an almost-empty stadium. Thousands protested outside before the Dodgers game where the group was to be recognized on June 16.
