CV NEWS FEED // The pro-life public interest legal foundation Thomas More Society has announced it will sue New York Attorney General Letitia James “to block imminent, ruinous legal action” against pro-life pregnancy centers in the state offering the Abortion Pill Reversal (APR).
In an emailed news release, the Thomas More Society stated its lawyers filed a verified complaint on April 30 in the New York Supreme Court against James, outlining the AG’s unlawful intimidation of pregnancy help organizations through threats of prosecution.
Thomas More represents a collective of pregnancy centers in the state, as well as Heartbeat International and CompassCare in the filing.
The legal foundation states that James’ targeted attacks are in direct violation of the First and Fourteenth Amendments of the United States Constitution, as well as the New York Constitution and state civil rights law.
“At its core, James’ threatened litigation seeks to illegally silence Heartbeat International and its network member organizations from sharing their science-based, life-affirming message about the benefits, success, effectiveness and safety of APR,” the statement continued.
As CatholicVote previously reported, James sent “Notice of Intention to Sue” letters on April 22 to around a dozen pregnancy centers in the state over alleged “repeated and persistent misleading statements and omissions,” regarding APR treatment.
“This is only the most recent move by pro-abortion political extremists in a two-year (period),” CompassCare wrote in a statement on April 25, describing James’ latest attempts to prosecute pregnancy centers over “misinformation” as yet another example of the “multi-layered, blue-state, pattern of attack against pro-life pregnancy centers, similar to Marxist-style allegations of misinformation leveled by Jane’s Revenge terrorist group against pro-lifers.”
“This is a political witch-hunt against small nonprofits that have selflessly served New York’s pregnant women and their children for over 50 years,” Executive Vice President and Head of Litigation at Thomas More Society Peter Breen declared in the statement:
We will fight back as long as it takes against Ms. James’ efforts to jeopardize the Christian and life-affirming missions of Heartbeat International, CompassCare, and all similar pro-life ministries in the State of New York.
