CV NEWS FEED // The son of a Hamas founder, former Israeli spy, and Christian convert is speaking out against the ideological motives of Hamas and other terrorist groups in wake of the conflict which has followed October 7.
In a recent exclusive sit-down interview with The Free Press (behind paywall,) Mosab Hassan Yousef denounced western sympathy for Hamas, whom he describes as “con artists who take advantage of the suffering of the [Palestinian] people.”
As the Free Press states in its report, Mosab “became Israel’s most valuable intelligence asset,” spending ten years gathering information from not only Hamas, but dozens of other extremist groups for Israel.
Prior to his work exploiting Hamas terrorists, however, Mosab Yousef grew up in Ramallah, a town in the West Bank just north of Jerusalem. His father, Hassan Yousef, is one of the radical extremist group’s founders. As a ten-year-old child, Mosab Yousef was arrested for throwing stones at Israeli settlers.
At the age of 18, Israeli police caught Mosab purchasing guns to shoot Israeli settlers with. “Thankfully, I was arrested,” he said, revealing that his time in Israeli prison led him to finally reject the group.
Although Mosab said he “had a problem with the culture from an early age,” it was not until he witnessed dozens killed and hundreds tortured by Hamas while he was in prison that he “lost faith,” in the Islamist cause.
“Hamas killed and tortured many people who they thought gave information to Israelis,” he recounted, adding: “Then I had questions: what would happen if Hamas won?”
Mosab described the ideology driving the atrocities committed by Hamas and other terrorist groups, noting that “they believe they are the sword of God on earth,” and that by torturing, killing, and carrying out suicide bombings, they are “punishing those who are disobedient to [God’s] call.”
“After ten years, I realized we were fighting a ghost, because we did not deal with the belief system,” Mosab said, continuing: “Anyone who believes in this kind of god has a mental issue, and should be in an insane asylum.”
In the wake of October 7, Mosab said he was not surprised by the brutality of the Hamas attack, but by the event’s scale. “There is no human language that can describe the evil that took place on October 7. And that’s not just a war crime. It’s not just killing. It’s genocide.”
Yet, as pro-Palestinian protests continue to break out in cities across the west against Israel’s continued military campain in Gaza, Mosab claims that “the biggest contributers to terrorism and violence are hypocrites” who deny the harmful nature of Islamist ideology:
“Most know what motivates terrorist attacks, but we remain silent because we don’t want to be islamophobic,” said Mosab. “We don’t want anyone acting as a sword of God or there will be bloodshed.”
As CatholicVote previously reported, pro-Palestinian demonstrations began to sweep across the US following the start of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, leading to an increase in violence and support for the militant group.
“There is a limit,” Mosab continued: “You cannot advocate on behalf of religious ideology in the name of freedom of speech. It is unacceptable.”
