CV NEWS FEED // Pope Francis plans to visit Singapore during his tour of Asia in September, which will be the first papal visit to the country since Pope St. John Paul II’s brief visit in 1986.
Singaporean newspaper The Straits Times reported that a Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman confirmed on April 2 that Singapore and the Vatican are currently in talks about the proposed visit.
The Vatican’s Secretary for Relations with States, Archbishop Paul Gallagher, told America Magazine in a recent interview that the Pope’s tour of Asia will also include Indonesia, Timor Leste, and Papua New Guinea. Vietnam could potentially be added to the tour as well.
Pope Francis’ visit would be the first in almost 40 years, the last time being a five-hour stop in 1986 on Pope St. John Paul II’s Asia-Pacific tour. Pope Francis plans to spend at least one day in Singapore.
According to Singapore’s 2020 census, there are about 395,000 Catholics in the country.
