CV NEWS FEED // U.S. Senate Democrats on Thursday blocked the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which would have prevented illegal migrants from voting in the country’s elections.
Sen. Mike Lee, R-UT, wrote on X (formerly Twitter) Thursday afternoon that he had called up the bill for a floor vote “seeking its immediate passage to ensure that only U.S. citizens will be able to vote in November.”
Senate Democrats, who hold a razor-thin majority in the chamber, objected.
“They don’t want to stop illegal immigrants and non-citizens from voting in American elections,” wrote Lee.
“One citizen, one vote,” Lee had said during a Thursday speech on the Senate floor. “Today, this foundational principle is under attack.”
“It’s under attack because President Biden refuses to enforce the law,” he added. “Now we face a direct threat to our entire electoral system.”
The day before, the Republican-controlled U.S. House passed the SAVE Act by a vote of 221-198.
Five House Democrats joined all voting Republicans in support of the bill: Reps. Henry Cuellar, D-TX, Don Davis, D-NC, Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, D-WA, Jared Golden, D-ME, and Vicente Gonzalez, D-TX.
All five lawmakers face competitive reelection races in November. Golden and Gluesenkamp Perez represent seats that former President Donald Trump won in 2020.
As CatholicVote previously reported, “U.S. Rep. Chip Roy, R-TX, first introduced the SAVE Act in May.”
The Biden administration subsequently came out in opposition to the bill which would have required “people to provide proof of citizenship before voting in upcoming elections,” CatholicVote noted.
CatholicVote’s Susan Berry, Ph.D., reported last month that Republicans urged support for the measure “in the wake of a blockbuster report from the New York Post that revealed thousands of non-citizens are obtaining voter registration forms at welfare agencies that fail to require proof of citizenship.”
