CV NEWS FEED // The Archdiocese of San Francisco, California, in May is holding a Holy Hour for persecuted Chinese Christians, which will be followed the next day by a presentation about Jimmy Lai, a Chinese Catholic and human rights activist currently on trial in Hong Kong.
Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone will be presiding over the Holy Hour and Solemn Vespers, and leading a rosary, praying especially for Cardinal Joseph Zen and Jimmy Lai, on May 7 in San Francisco at the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption.
On May 8 there will be a second Eucharistic Holy Hour at St. Patrick’s Seminary and University in Menlo Park, California, after which Lai’s godfather and noted Wall Street Journal columnist William McGurn will give a presentation titled, “The Prison Witness of Jimmy Lai.”
United Kingdom citizen Jimmy Lai is a Catholic journalist, Hong Kong businessman, and human rights activist who was arrested in Hong Kong in 2020 for allegedly violating the region’s national security law by criticizing the Chinese government in his newspaper, the Apple Daily.
Lai has been in prison for nearly three years, and his trial began in December 2023. He is 76 years old.
In February, the Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong Foundation published a report warning that religious freedom in Hong Kong is collapsing under the pressure of the anti-religion Chinese Communist Party.
