CV NEWS FEED // A bombshell new database published today revealed that children have been subjected on a limited basis to “transgender” procedures in Catholic hospitals across the country, in violation of Catholic medical ethics.
Do No Harm, a leading secular advocacy organization focused on combating transgenderism in medicine, released a website called stoptheharmdatabase.com which detailed where transgender surgeries and interventions are being performed on minors.
The website is searchable and displays counts of surgeries and prescriptions for cross-sex hormones or puberty blockers.
The data come from medical billing claims, and all interventions counted are connected with a diagnosis of gender dysphoria or gender identity disorder, meaning they cannot be mistaken for cases of uncontroversial issues like cancer.
CatholicVote surveyed the database, identifying which hospitals are Catholic based on whether they are listed as a member of the Catholic Health Association. That research revealed 170 children underwent transgender surgeries and 508 children received cross-sex hormone or puberty blocker prescriptions at Catholic hospitals in the United States between 2019 and 2023.
The vast majority of Catholic hospitals on the list each performed a transgender intervention on fewer than ten children. Many had just one patient attributed to them.
“This is an indication that in nearly all cases, a doctor went rogue and was corrected,” said Tommy Valentine, director of CatholicVote’s Catholic Accountability Project. “It confirms that the nonsense called ‘gender-affirming care’ has no place in Catholic hospitals.”
However, there are several notable cases in which Catholic hospitals appear to be subjecting children to “transgender” procedures intentionally and potentially on an ongoing basis.
The largest number of transgender interventions among Catholic hospitals was found at Providence Health & Services, the nation’s fourth-largest Catholic health system.
Providence Milwaukie Hospital in Milwaukie, Oregon, performed “transgender” surgeries on 46 children. Providence St. Joseph Hospital in Orange, California, performed such surgeries on 18 children. Several other Providence hospitals had relatively large counts of patients receiving cross-sex hormones, puberty blockers, or surgeries.

Some of the cases occurred at Catholic hospitals owned by a secular system. All Catholic hospitals must follow the rules outlined in the Ethical & Religious Directives promulgated by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), even if they are owned by a secular system.
The USCCB issued a document in 2023 making clear that “transgender” interventions are not permissible in Catholic hospitals, and an upcoming revision to the Ethical & Religious Directives is expected to codify that prohibition.
Valentine emphasized that blame lies with the hospitals, not the bishops.
“Catholic healthcare is a massive industry that takes in $200 billion in revenue every year,” he said. “The transgender craze exploded only in the last few years, and bishops could not have been expected to know this was going on. Now that they do, we need to rally behind them to push through the necessary reforms.”
Valentine said he spoke with a number of Church officials who were shocked to learn the interventions were occurring in Catholic hospitals.
CatholicVote plans to release the findings of an investigation into Catholic healthcare in the coming months.
“I know a lot of people in and around Catholic healthcare, and it’s clear that most of our Catholic hospitals provide care that respects human dignity. But a minority of them have lost the plot,” Valentine said.
“Catholics must channel their anger and shock over this constructively,” he continued. “We’re all on the same team here, including the bishops, and we need to work together to prevent this madness from ever happening again within our hospitals.”
