CV NEWS FEED // Pro-life Democrat Kristen Day is challenging Republicans to support another child tax credit extension, calling it a pro-life issue and “the best way” to get Democratic leaders on board with pro-life legislation.
“A conservative pro-life movement that doesn’t address the economic realities that undergird abortion is a movement without a future in the United States,” Day wrote in a recent op-ed for Newsweek. Day is the executive director of Democrats for Life of America.
Women living in poverty are increasingly seeking abortions because it’s too expensive to raise a child, Day explained. She argued that it is now time for pro-life Republicans to address poverty as one of the primary causes of abortion.
“Before he was elected speaker of the House last October, Mike Johnson (R-La.) called abortion an ‘American holocaust,’” Day wrote. “If that description is right, Johnson’s Senate GOP colleagues have a moral obligation to address the root causes of abortion.”
For Day, expanding child tax credit is the best way to address pro-life issues.
“It’s immorally expensive to raise a child in this country,” she wrote. “According to the latest data, it costs over $300,000 to rear a child from conception to adulthood. The Child Tax Credit seeks to right that wrong by providing much-needed financial relief for working-class families across America.”
“The bipartisan deal would increase refundable child tax credits and incrementally raise the current $1,600 benefit limit,” she continued. “It also allows taxpayers to use their previous year’s income if that gives them access to more money.”
Day added that the pro-life movement needs to move away from legal battles towards protecting the lives of children even after birth, citing instances like Ohio’s recent support of abortion. In November, a bill legalizing abortion in the state was “passed with overwhelming support.”
“There’s also a growing perception that the pro-life movement is closely aligned with the radical politics of the MAGA movement and has little commitment to children after birth,” Day wrote.
The best way to combat this perception, as well as gain the support of Democratic leaders, is to support a child tax credit extension as a matter of pro-life policy, Day explained.
“It’s time for the pro-life Republicans to make one thing clear—life begins at conception and doesn’t end at birth,” Day wrote.
