CV NEWS FEED // After Democratic nominee Kamala Harris announced that she was selecting Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz to be her running mate in the 2024 election, a chorus of critics voiced concerns over Walz’s gubernatorial record and the newly minted Harris-Walz ticket’s agenda.
“Harris-Walz is the most anti-Catholic ticket ever,” stated CatholicVote President Brian Burch. By selecting Walz, Harris showed she is “going all-in for her far-left base.”
In the past week, many on the hard left, such as Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-VT, had publicly praised Walz and called for Harris to pick him over Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, who was also reportedly a finalist to be the Democratic vice presidential candidate.
Harris picking Walz was “the most left-wing direction she could have taken,” Burch explained:
Gov. Walz’s COVID lockdowns, mandates, and “stay-at-home orders” were some of the harshest in the nation – and they targeted the Church in particular.
He opened the Mall of America for “retail therapy,” but kept Catholic parishes closed. That honestly tells you everything you need to know.
“Kamala Harris sent a clear signal with her choice of running mate,” wrote Burch. “Catholics, we are coming for you.”
Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sen. JD Vance, R-OH, responded to the Walz pick by highlighting controversial policies backed by his opponent.
“This is a guy who has proposed shipping more manufacturing jobs to China,” said Vance, a Catholic, “and has proposed defunding the police just as Kamala Harris does.”
“They make an interesting tag team,” Vance continued, “because Tim Walz allowed rioters to burn down Minneapolis in the summer of 2020, and then the few that got caught, Kamala Harris helped bail them out of jail.”
Vance concluded that the selection of Walz is
instructive for what it says about Kamala Harris: that she doesn’t care about the border, she doesn’t care about crime, she doesn’t care about American energy, and most importantly she doesn’t care about the Americans who have been made to suffer under those policies.
Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis also blasted Walz on the 2020 riots, which began in Minneapolis under Walz’s governorship.
“We all remember the BLM riots of 2020,” said DeSantis, also a Catholic. “Those were riots that Harris egged on and raised money to bail out the rioters.”
He argued that Harris’ new running mate “sat back” and let the riots happen.
“[Walz] sat back and let the city of Minneapolis burn,” DeSantis said. “That city has been gutted as a result of those riots.”
During an interview with FOX News, Rep. Byron Donalds, R-FL, said that “what matters is” Walz’s record as Governor of Minnesota as well as Harris’ record both as vice president and as a senator from California.
“This is a very dangerous ticket,” Donalds warned, “a very liberal ticket, a very progressive ticket. This ticket will leave the American people last.”
Sen. Marco Rubio, R-FL, wrote in an X post: “With #HarrisWalz ticket the lunatic left has completed its takeover of the democrat party.”
Sen. Mike Lee, R-UT, posted a picture of a scene from Minneapolis in 2020, where a mob of rioters had set a local business on fire. Above the picture, the faces of Harris and Walz were superimposed.
“One person’s anarchy is another person’s ‘mostly peaceful protest,’” Lee wrote.
The now Democratic vice presidential nominee seemed to equate “socialism” with “neighborliness.”
