CV NEWS FEED // A coalition of 10 federal lawmakers led by Sen. Marco Rubio, R-FL, and Rep. Josh Brecheen, R-OK, pressed the Biden administration about an abortion-inducing drug’s possible risk to the American water supply.
“We write with regard to the chemical abortion drug mifepristone and its potential … effect on water systems in the United States,” the lawmakers stated in a Wednesday letter addressed to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Michael Regan:
Given the steadily increasing rate of at-home chemical abortions, it is vital that the [EPA] ensure mifepristone, the drug’s active metabolites in blood and placenta tissue, and the fetal remains of unborn children — all of which are unbelievably being flushed into America’s wastewater system — do not pose a threat to the health and safety of humans and wildlife.
“The full impact of mifepristone has never been sufficiently studied,” the letter emphasized.
“When the FDA approved the drug in 2000, it relied on a 1996 environmental assessment that failed to consider that human fetal remains and the drug’s active metabolites would be making their way into wastewater systems across the U.S.,” the lawmakers went on to note. “The American people deserve to know the negative effects caused by chemical abortion drugs.”

The lawmakers asked the EPA to specify how it “plan[s] to ensure the safety of our waterways and drinking water,” and “[t]o what extent” the agency has “studied the impact of mifepristone on water systems” in the country.
They also requested information regarding “the negative health effects for humans” and aquatic wildlife “associated with exposure to mifepristone and fetal remains” in water.
The 10 Republicans gave the EPA a deadline of July 15 to respond.
The agency told FOX News that “[o]nce received, EPA will review this letter and will respond appropriately.”
Besides Rubio and Brecheen, the letter’s signatories included Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-TN, Rep. Matt Rosendale, R-MT, Rep. Alex Mooney, R-WV, Rep. Paul Gosar, R-AZ, Rep. Gus Bilirakis, R-FL, Rep. Barry Moore, R-AL, Rep. Debbie Lesko, R-AL, Rep. Jeff Duncan, R-SC, and Rep. Jim Banks, R-IN.
Rubio, Rosendale, Mooney, and Gosar are Catholics.
CatholicVote supported the letter and encouraged lawmakers to sign it.
