CV NEWS FEED // A Japanese diaper company announced on March 25 that it will stop producing baby diapers in September and focus instead on the production of diapers for adults.
The BBC reported that Oji Holdings, the parent company of diaper manufacturer Oji Nepia, is not the first company to make the switch from baby to adult products. Sales of adult diapers have been higher than baby diapers in Japan for over a decade due to falling birth rates in the country.
Oji Holdings stated in a news release that the company has produced 400 million baby diapers annually. Now, the company will continue to focus on manufacturing adult diapers while expanding its business overseas in Malaysia and Indonesia.
According to Reuters, the number of live births in Japan fell by 5.1% to a record low of 758,631 in 2023. The BBC reported that Japan now has one of the world’s oldest populations, with nearly 30% over age 65 and more than 10% over age 80.
CatholicVote reported that the world population is also declining at an alarming rate, likely leading to a global crisis by 2100.
CatholicVote additionally reported that South Korean government officials are struggling to provide incentives for young people to marry and have children, while in China, hospitals are closing their obstetrics units due to a lack of births.
