CV NEWS FEED // Iran launched missiles at Israel’s capital Tel Aviv shortly after 7:30 p.m. (Israel Daylight Time) on October 1, launching sirens across the country.
The Israel Defense Forces estimate that Iran sent 180 missiles into the country, many of which were intercepted, according to CNN. Some of the missiles landed in Israel and the west bank, which is occupied.
Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated hours after the attack: “Iran made a big mistake tonight – and it will pay for it. The regime in Iran does not understand our determination to defend ourselves and our determination to retaliate against our enemies.”
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that Iran’s attack was “effectively defeated.”
Israelis have posted video footage of the rockets:
The country has halted trains and planes, and has redirected planes flying into the country.
The White House warned Israel earlier in the day that it had “indications that Iran is preparing to imminently launch a ballistic missile attack against Israel,” and added that the U.S. was “actively supporting defensive preparations to defend Israel against this attack,” according to CNN.
A senior White House official stated that “A direct military attack from Iran against Israel will carry severe consequences for Iran.”
President Joe Biden reiterated that the United States is “fully supportive” of Israel, adding that the US government was deliberating with Isreal about how to respond to the attack.
“We’re going to get all the data straight, we’re in constant contact with the Israeli government and our counterparts and that remains to be seen,” he stated.
The Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said that the attack was a response to Israel’s killing of Hezbollah’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah, according to the Israeli news agency Tasnim.
Iran’s mission to the United Nations, located in New York, posted to their official X account shortly after the attack that, “Iran’s legal, rational, and legitimate response to the terrorist acts of the Zionist regime… has been duly carried out.”
They added, “Should the Zionist regime dare to respond or commit further acts of malevolence, a subsequent and crushing response will ensue.”
