CV NEWS FEED // Multiple Chicago Democrats have long used the word “crisis” to refer to the nation’s unprecedented immigration surge, according to internal emails recently unearthed by The Daily Signal.
Their use of the word came despite constant messaging from President Joe Biden and his administration that there was “no crisis” at the border.
After years of saying otherwise, the president finally admitted there is a “crisis” on Friday of last week.
Chicago is set to host the Democratic National Convention in August, where Biden will most likely be proclaimed his party’s nominee for a second consecutive time.
According to the Signal’s Fred Lucas, Chicago Alderman Byron Sigcho-Lopez called the situation at the border “a humanitarian crisis” in a 2022 email. He used the word “crisis” again later in the same sentence.
Sigcho-Lopez is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and an ally of leftist Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson.
Lucas cited several more examples of Chicago politicians discussing the “crisis” at the border via email. These included officials from the administrations of Johnson, his predecessor former Mayor Lori Lightfoot, and Democratic Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker.
Over the first three years of the Biden administration, the president, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, and other senior members of the administration consistently used words such as “challenge” and “situation” rather than “crisis.”
Earlier this month, White House reporters asked Biden if he would use the word “crisis” to refer to the skyrocketing number of migrants entering the country illegally under his presidency.
“No,” he replied before blaming House Republicans for the situation.
Biden dramatically shifted his tone last week, however.
“For too long, we all know the border’s been broken,” he said in a Friday statement from the White House. “That’s why two months ago, I instructed my team to begin negotiations with a bipartisan group of Senators to seriously, and finally, address the border crisis.”
The president referred to the “crisis” one more time in the over-200-word statement.
“If you’re serious about the border crisis, pass a bipartisan bill and I will sign it,” he stated in its final sentence.
Biden’s sudden decision to stop avoiding the word “crisis” comes weeks after his own administration’s Customs and Border Protection (CBP) released record-shattering numbers – the latest data on migrant encounters at the U.S.-Mexico border.
As CatholicVote previously reported:
According to a January 1 FOX News report, “more than 302,000 migrants were documented attempting to cross the U.S. southern border” last month. “It is the highest total for a single month ever recorded.” It is also the first time migrant encounters have exceeded 300,000.
