CV NEWS FEED // An interfaith group of Christians is planning a prayer vigil outside the California State Capitol while an anti-Catholic hate group is being honored inside.
The prayer vigil will take place on the steps of the Capitol on Monday at 2:00 PM. The California Family Council and California Catholic Conference are hosting the event with Catholic and evangelical leaders, including Sacramento Bishop Jaime Soto.
Democrats in the California legislature are honoring the “Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence” (SPI) on the state Senate floor on Monday. SPI is a radical group of male LGBTQ activists who dress in lewd nun costumes and commit public acts of sacrilege.
Michael Williams, a member of the group who also hosts a pornography podcast, is slated to be honored as part of a “Pride Day.”
State Democratic Sen. Scott Wiener, who has introduced bills to decriminalize prostitution and loosen restrictions on sex offenders and pedophiles, extended the invitation to Williams. Numerous Republican legislators have called on Senate President Pro Tempore Toni Atkins to rescind the invitation, but she has refused.
The California Catholic Conference called claims that SPI is simply a charitable group “misguided about the vile, hateful, and divisive things the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence do.”
Monday’s 2 PM prayer service will spotlight real sisters and nuns who serve their communities, in contrast to the controversial hate group being honored inside.
California Family Council president Jonathan Keller said “This promotion of the blasphemous ‘Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence’ shows a clear disregard for the religious sentiments of millions of Californians. Such an act sends a troubling message to our people of faith across the Golden State.”
