CV NEWS FEED // Democratic nominee Kamala Harris on Wednesday alleged that her Republican opponent Donald Trump “said he wanted generals like Adolf Hitler.”
Harris cited as her source former Trump administration Chief of Staff and Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly, who emerged as a well-known opponent of Trump after leaving the former president’s administration.
“Yesterday we learned that Donald Trump’s former Chief of Staff John Kelly, a retired four-star general, confirmed that while Donald Trump was president, he said he wanted generals like Adolf Hitler had,” Harris told reporters outside her house in a three-minute speech.
“It is clear from John Kelly’s words,” the Democratic candidate said, “that Donald Trump is someone who ‘falls into the general definition of fascist.’”
“Donald Trump said that because he does not want a military that is loyal to the United States Constitution,” she also said during her remarks. “He wants a military that is loyal to him.”
“In just the past week, Donald Trump has repeatedly called his fellow Americans, ‘the enemy from within,’” Harris added, referring to comments Trump made about former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-CA, and Rep. Adam Schiff, D-CA.
“It is deeply troubling and incredibly dangerous that Donald Trump would invoke Adolf Hitler, the man who’s responsible for the deaths of six million Jews and hundreds of thousands of Americans,” Harris stated.
“All of this is further evidence for the American people of who Donald Trump really is,” the struggling presidential candidate claimed. “This is a window into who Donald Trump really is, from the people who know him best.”
“Donald Trump is increasingly unhinged and unstable,” Harris charged. “And in a second term, people like John Kelly would not be there to be the guardrails against his propensities and his actions.”
CNBC reported that Harris’ comments came “a day after reports of recent interviews with” Kelly, “who recounted Trump’s comments about the Nazi leader while Trump was president.”
Kelly served as the White House Chief of Staff under Trump’s first term from 2017 to 2019. His tenure in this position was controversial, and Trump at the time reportedly criticized Kelly’s lack of political skills.
The official had previously served for six months in 2017 as Trump’s original Secretary of Homeland Security.
Reactions
Harris’ Wednesday remarks were widely panned by critics.
Political commentator Benny Johnson called the sitting vice president’s accusations a “smear campaign” and referred to the July 13 and September 15 attempts on Trump’s life.
“This is the same rhetoric that led to TWO assassination attempts against Trump,” Johnson wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “The most evil, corrupt administration.”
The Babylon Bee writer Ashley St. Clair wrote on X, “if u cant afford to feed ur family and are wondering how kamala harris is going to help you, dont worry.”
“[S]he just held an emergency 3 minute press conference to call trump literally hitler and then went back inside,” St. Clair added.
One X user wrote, “As a Jew, nothing is more offensive to me than hearing Kamala Harris compare her political opponent to Hitler simply because she disagrees with him.”
“Hitler was responsible for the murder of six million Jews, whereas Trump has done everything to make Jews in America safer,” the user continued. “The antisemitism emanating from the Harris campaign is utterly revolting.”
