CV NEWS FEED // A coalition of Republican senators on Friday announced they will cease all cooperation with Democrats until they see accountability following the conviction of former President Donald Trump on 34 counts the previous day.
“Strongly worded statements are not enough,” stated Sen. Mike Lee, R-UT, who headed up the coalition. Joining him were Sens. JD Vance, R-OH, Tommy Tuberville, R-AL, Eric Schmitt, R-MO, Marsha Blackburn, R-TN, Rick Scott, R-FL, Roger Marshall, R-KS, and Marco Rubio, R-FL.
The senators all signed a letter, dated May 31, which stated:
The White House has made a mockery of the rule of law and fundamentally altered our politics in un-American ways. As a Senate Republican conference, we are unwilling to aid and abet this White House in its project to tear this country apart. To that end, we will not 1) allow any increase to onon-security related funding for this administration, or any appropriations bill which funds partisan lawfare; 2) vote to confirm this administration’s political and judicial appointees; and 3) allow expedited consideration and passage of Democrat legislation or authorities that are not directly relevant to the safety of the American people.
“Those who turned our judicial system into a political cudgel must be held accountable,” Lee stated on social media. “We are no longer cooperating with any Democrat legislative priorities or nominations, and we invite all concerned Senators to join our stand.”
As CatholicVote reported the previous day, a “New York City jury found former President Donald Trump guilty on all 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in the first degree,” marking “the first time in American history a jury has found a current or former president guilty of a crime.”
“Trump has continued to maintain his innocence and a chorus of observers have blasted the unprecedented conviction as politically-charged lawfare and evidence of a weaponization of the justice system,” CatholicVote reported:
CatholicVote President Brian Burch stated: “This verdict is a joke.”
“A biased prosecutor,” he continued. “No underlying crime. Felony predicated on a misdemeanor that was never convicted.”
“Make no mistake: This is election interference,” said Burch. “This is the total politicization of our legal system. We are more committed than ever to rallying millions of Catholics to help Trump win in November.”
