CV NEWS FEED // According to a recent Gallup poll, one in five Generation Z adults in the United States self-identified as “lesbian,” “gay,” “bisexual,” “transgender,” or “other” in 2023.
In mid-March, Gallup reported the results of a 2023 survey, which found a significant increase of adults self-identifying as LGBT across generations of adults in the United States. Men and women in Generation Z had the highest percentages.
According to the Gallup poll which surveyed over 12,000 adults, 22.3% of Generation Z adults identify as LGBT, compared to 9.8% of Millennials. Less than 5% of Generation X adults, 2.3% of Baby Boomers, and 1.1% of the Silent Generation identified as LGBT.
Across the generations, a total 7.6% of all U.S. adults self-identified as LGBT in 2023.
“If current trends continue,” Gallup reported, “it is likely that the proportion of LGBTQ+ identifiers will exceed 10% of U.S. adults at some point within the next three decades.”
Gallup reported that 2012 was the first year it conducted a poll about U.S. adults identifying as LGBT. The percentage of U.S. adults self-identifying as LGBT has “more than doubled” since the 2012 poll. In 2012, a total 3.5% of U.S. adults identified as such.
Noting the overall percentage increases since 2012, Gallup reported, “These changes have been led by younger Americans, with about one in 10 millennials and one in five Gen Z adults having an LGBTQ+ status.”
In 2023, 10.6% of men in Generation Z identify as LGBT, more than twice the percentage of the Millennial generation, which is 5.4%. Approximately 3.5% of men in Generation X identify as LGBT, compared to 2.7% of Baby Boomers, and 1.2% of the Silent Generation.
For women, the percentage self-identifying as LGBT is more than twice as high. In Generation Z, 28.5% of women identify as LGBT, compared to the 12.4% of Millennial women who said they identify the same.
In Generation X, 4.7% of women identify as LGBT. For women of the Baby Boomer and Silent Generations, the percentages drop to 1.9% and 0.8%.
