
CV NEWS FEED // The Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux in Louisiana announced on Monday, January 22, the appointment of a new diocesan administrator and funeral preparations for Bishop Mario Dorsonville.
Dorsonville died suddenly at age 63 on January 19, less than a year after being appointed as the governing Catholic bishop.
In a statement posted on Facebook, the diocese announced that the College of Consultors have named Fr. Simon Peter Engurait as Administrator of the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux.
“Fr. Simon Peter will remain in this role until the next bishop of our diocese is appointed by the Holy Father, Pope Francis,” the statement added. “Join us in praying for Fr. Simon Peter, and the people of our diocese as we continue to grieve the loss of our father and shepherd, Bishop Dorsonville.”
Maegan Martin, Director of Communications of the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux told CV that the College of Consultors has also made arrangements for the funeral of the Colombian-born bishop, who died suddenly after having surgery to address a liver problem.
On Wednesday, January 31, at the Cathedral of St. Francis de Sales, there will be a wake from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., followed by evening prayer and a Memorial Mass for the Dead at 7:00 p.m. (local time).
On Thursday, February 1, at the St. Joseph Co-Cathedral, there will be a wake from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m, followed by a Funeral Mass at 2:00 p.m.
Bishop Dorsonville will be buried on the grounds of St. Joseph Co-Cathedral in Thibodaux.
