CV NEWS FEED // Florida on Monday filed a lawsuit against the Biden administration’s Department of Health and Human Services over a new pro-LGBTQ rule that promotes subjecting children to “transgender” procedures.
Florida is one of many states that currently outlaw the subjection of minors to sexual surgeries and hormone treatments.
The lawsuit states: “Under the guise of federal non-discrimination rules, [HHS] seeks to redefine the practice of medicine.”
“HHS’s rules threaten the livelihood of doctors who refuse to provide experimental, sterilizing, ‘gender-change’ interventions to persons suffering from psychological distress—including minor children,” the suit goes on:
To do so, HHS purports to override the State of Florida’s laws and regulations protecting the health and safety of its residents. HHS further threatens the loss of federal funds for States and insurance issuers that refuse to cover these interventions.
Republican Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody is leading the lawsuit.
“Florida passed a law to protect our children from dangerous, irreversible gender-transition drugs and surgeries,” Moody stated in a Tuesday press release.
“Now, Biden and his federal bureaucrats are trying to go around our child-protection law to force the state to pay for puberty blockers and gender-transition surgery for children,” she continued. “These rules trample states’ power to protect their own citizens and we will not stand by as Biden tries, yet again, to use the force of the federal government to unlawfully stifle Florida’s effort to protect children.”
According to the press release from Moody’s office, the HHS’ rules “go far beyond what is required by law and could result in a cost of around $200 million a year to [Florida].”
Catholic News Agency (CNA) on Tuesday reported that the
recently promulgated rule, filed in the Federal Register on Monday and set to go into effect in July, amends the nondiscrimination clause in Section 1557 of the federal Affordable Care Act by expanding the definition of “sex” to include “gender identity,” among other new additions.
HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra is a self-professed Catholic. In addition to his support of the LGBTQ movement, he is also a staunch proponent of abortion on demand.
