CV NEWS FEED // Democratic New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham issued an anti-gun executive order that went so far that even prominent gun control advocates denounced it as unconstitutional.
As Ryan Saavedra of The Daily Wire reported, Lujan Grisham issued an “executive order on Thursday declaring that gun violence was a public health emergency in the Democrat-controlled state.”
“On Friday, [Lujan] Grisham unilaterally suspended open and concealed carry laws in Albuquerque and the surrounding area,” Saavedra continued. “She said that she could further lengthen or renew her order.”
Gun control activist and left-wing political organizer David Hogg rebuked Grisham. “I support gun safety but there is no such thing as a state public health emergency exception to the U.S. Constitution,” he wrote Saturday on X (formerly known as Twitter).
Hogg was not the only prominent leftist who bashed the New Mexico governor for going too far. He was also not the first.
Less than an hour before Hogg’s post, Rep. Ted Lieu, D-CA, sent a post with a very similar message.
“I support gun safety laws,” said Lieu, who has served in Congress since 2015:
However, this order from the Governor of New Mexico violates the U.S. Constitution. No state in the union can suspend the federal Constitution. There is no such thing as a state public health emergency exception to the U.S. Constitution.
In 2017, Lieu notably walked out of a House moment of silence for victims of a Texas mass shooting.
“I can’t do this again,” Lieu said in a Facebook post at the time explaining his decision:
I’ve been to too many moments of silences. In just my short career in Congress, three of the worst mass shootings in U.S. history have occurred. I will not be silent. What we need is we need action. We need to pass gun safety legislation now.
Lieu is a member of the far-left Congressional Progressive Caucus, a group that also includes “Squad” members Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-NY, and Ilhan Omar, D-MN.
Despite being a self-professed Catholic, Lieu has also consistently voted with his party on abortion and LGBT issues, earning him an “F” rating from the Catholic Accountability Project.
X owner Elon Musk, who has supported gun control measures in the past, also chimed in to bash Grisham’s overreach.
“At risk of stating what should be obvious, deliberately violating the Constitution is next-level illegal,” Musk wrote in a post to his platform. “How soon can this person be removed from office?”
Bernalillo County District Attorney Sam Bregman also shot down the order, stating he would refuse to enforce it. Bernalillo County includes Albuquerque.
“As an officer of the court, I cannot and will not enforce something that is clearly unconstitutional,” said Bregman. “This office will continue to focus on criminals of any age that use guns in the commission of a crime.”
Bregman is the former Chairman of the Democratic Party of New Mexico. Grisham appointed him to his current position earlier this year.
The governor herself openly acknowledged that her controversial unilateral action will likely not hold up in court. “There will be a legal challenge and I can’t tell you that we win it,” she said.
