CV NEWS FEED // A young deacon is set to become the first African American to be ordained in the state of Iowa.
Deacon Gregory Lambert, a seminarian from Mundelein Seminary in Chicago, will be ordained in the Diocese of Dubuque in May.
According to the Diocese of Dubuque, Lambert’s discernment journey began in Florida, where he grew up in a household of fallen-away Catholic Hispanics. When he was younger, he also practiced Buddhism, which was what first taught him to pray.
Later, his mother returned to the Church and brought her family along with her. Lambert eventually began attending a youth group and had several encounters with seminarians and priests, which led him to the seminary.
According to Christian Newswire, Lambert decided to move to Iowa after a family member also moved there. Now, Lambert serves at a parish in Iowa and is also the head of theology at Catholic Notebook, an organization that seeks to integrate theology with a holistic lifestyle.
Christian Newswire reported that Lambert’s journey to the priesthood was marked by challenges but that he persevered through it all.
“In a climate where indifference and disregard sometimes prevail, Reverend Mr. Lambert chose faith and reason, becoming a beacon of hope and inspiration for young black men and aspiring individuals, demonstrating the possibilities that unfold when surrendering to the will of God,” Christian Newswire reported.
