CV NEWS FEED // CatholicVote signed onto a pair of letters opposing a bill in the Democratic-controlled Senate that would require some American women to register for the Selective Service System – commonly known as “the draft.”
“Last Friday, the Senate Armed Services Committee, once again, passed a National Defense Authorization Act that would require women to register for the draft,” began a Wednesday letter penned by Advancing American Freedom (AAF) Executive Director Paul Teller.
Teller addressed his letter to House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-LA, and outgoing Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-KY.
“The notion of the United States of America requiring women to register to fight our wars is simply untenable and must be opposed at all costs,” he continued:
This decision flies in the face of truth and everything that we claim to stand for as conservatives. There is simply no good reason to require women to register for the draft absent the complete rejection of logic and defiance of common sense.
We oppose this move in the strongest possible terms and urge you and all Republicans to oppose any legislation that results in young women registering with the Selective Service for a possible future draft.

Concerned Women for America’s (CWA) Legislative Action Committee circulated a similar letter, also joined by CatholicVote, opposing the move.
“We write to you in serious concern about the [NDAA] for 2025 which the Senate Armed Services Committee approved on June 14th,” states the letter to senators penned by CWA President Penny Nance.
“The legislation is unacceptable,” Nance stressed. “This monumental policy change would force the U.S. military to erase key biological differences between males and females that will affect readiness in wartime.”
“This is a matter of national security – not ‘women’s rights,’ ‘men’s rights,’ or civilian volunteer service,” she explained:
The Senate should not buy into the lie that women’s equality with men means that the sexes are the same. Drafting our daughters should not be a political ploy used to used secure critical funds for the military.

Nance went on to call the provision that would subject women to the draft an “ill-advised social experiment that would imperil the defense of our nation.”
“Sacrificing our young women on the faux altar of equality is a dealbreaker,” she concluded. “Any country that gambles the lives of its daughter on foreign wars threatens its own future and we call on Congress to reject this provision in the FY 2025 NDAA.”
CatholicVote Director of Governmental Affairs Tom McClusky said that the move by the Democratic-controlled Senate “isn’t about allowing women to volunteer to serve — this is about forcing them to serve in combat roles.”
“We need to stand up for our wives, our daughters, our sisters, our mothers,” McClusky added.
