CV NEWS FEED // The Catholic Foundation of South Louisiana has announced the founding of a new seminarian scholarship fund in honor of Bishop Mario E. Dorsonville of the diocese of Houma Thibodaux, who recently passed away unexpectedly.
“In recognition of Bishop Dorsonville’s unwavering commitment to fostering vocations, the Catholic Foundation has inaugurated Bishop Mario E. Dorsonville Seminarian Scholarship Fund,” the organization stated in a press release.
The fund will promote the education of seminarians within the southern Louisiana Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux. The merit-based scholarship will be given to one seminarian each year.
Bishop Dorsonville, 63, passed away last Friday due to complications from liver disease after having served as bishop of the diocese for less than a year.
A memorial service will take place on January 31 at the St. Francis de Sales Cathedral in Houma, followed by a burial the next day on the cathedral grounds. In lieu of flowers, the late bishop’s community is invited to contribute to the Scholarship fund.
