CV NEWS FEED // A Catholic elementary school in Cincinnati recently became the first school in the district to become certifiably “heart safe” after providing both staff and students with cardiac emergency response training.
According to a local May 21 WCPO report, All Saints Elementary school was able to access the necessary training by partnering with Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and the national non-profit organization, Project ADAM (Automated Defibrillation in Adam’s Memory).
The school nurse at All Saints, Terra Burpee, facilitated the partnership last year in hopes of creating “a more equipped school.”
“When times matters it’s super important that everyone is trained and prepared,” Burpee said.
Now, after several months of training, several faculty members and students among the eighth and sixth grade class are certified and have CPR and AED (automated external defibrillator) training.
Burpee noted that making this training available to students “helps them feel empowered to have a role.”
“Because in the event of a sudden cardiac episode, seconds matter,” she added. “As soon as we can get there and start hands-on CPR and AED, the promise for the patient is a lot better.”
