Singer Britney Spears has reportedly revealed in her upcoming memoir that she obtained an abortion over twenty years ago and still suffers from the experience.
The memoir, entitled “The Woman in Me,” discloses that pop star Justin Timberlake, Spears’ boyfriend from 1999 to 2002, was the unborn child’s father.
According to an excerpt of the memoir obtained by People Magazine, Spears wrote: “To this day, it’s one of the most agonizing things I have ever experienced in my life.”
The now-41-year-old recounted how the news of her pregnancy was unexpected, but not unwelcome.
“It was a surprise, but for me, it wasn’t a tragedy. I loved Justin so much. I always expected us to have a family together one day. This would just be much earlier than I’d anticipated,” Spears wrote. “But Justin definitely wasn’t happy about the pregnancy. He said we weren’t ready to have a baby in our lives, that we were way too young.”
At the time she became pregnant, Spears was 19 and Timberlake was 20.
“I’m sure people will hate me for this, but I agreed not to have the baby. I don’t know if that was the right decision. If it had been left up to me alone, I never would have done it,” Spears admitted.
Having grown up in a Baptist family, Spears claimed in the book that she was raised “not to get an abortion.”
Lila Rose described the news in a post on X as “heartbreaking.”
