CV NEWS FEED // The board of supervisors in Dane County, Wisconsin, where Madison is located, passed a resolution in June that made the county a “sanctuary” for “trans” and “non-binary” people.
As previously reported by CatholicVote, Dane County Supervisor Rick Rose introduced the resolution in early June, and it was passed at the next board meeting on June 15.
According to the resolution, access to “sex-reassignment” medications and body-mutilating surgeries is a “fundamental right” for everyone, including children.
Rep. Barbara Dittrich (R-WI), one of the authors of Wisconsin’s “Save Women’s Sports Act,” told CatholicVote that Dane County’s resolution “does not hold the force of the law.”
“However, it would preclude the Dane County Sheriff’s Department from enforcing any laws enacted by the Legislature and Governor, hence violating codified law,” she said. “I would assume that, should this happen, it would result in a lawsuit against the county.”
“I am not personally in favor of any city or county ‘sanctuary’ as these resolutions defy the law,” she continued:
I am especially concerned about the aggressive push to transition minor children in our state and across the country. It is a very permanent decision at an age where the brain is not fully developed. Transitioning children is a dangerous path to go down, in my opinion. It promises to solve mental health issues that it has not been proven to solve in any respected studies.
The Cap Times, a Madison news outlet, reported that over 50 people spoke at the Dane County Board meeting on June 15, most of them voicing concerns about the resolution. Nevertheless, the board voted 25-1 to approve the measure.
Rose, the resolution’s sponsor, told CatholicVote that the measure went into effect immediately.
The move acts as a preemptive measure against any state laws that might try to protect people, including children, from “trans” surgeries.
The resolution declares that the “Dane County Board of Supervisors firmly states its commitment to protect transgender and nonbinary individuals”, and goes on to say
that, if the state of Wisconsin passes a law that imposes criminal or civil punishments, fines, or professional sanctions on any person or organization that seeks, provides, receives or helps someone to receive gender-affirming care such as puberty blockers, hormones or surgery, the Dane County Board of Supervisors urges the Sheriff to make enforcement their lowest priority.
“Being aware of what’s happening on the state level, we wanted to draw a circle around the county and give residents safety and sanctity for making those healthcare decisions,” Rose told CatholicVote, referring to Wisconsin’s Republican state legislators who oppose “trans” surgeries.
Steve McConkey, president of 4 Winds Athletics, told CatholicVote that the biggest problem with the new rule is that kids whose parents or teachers or counselors identify them as “trans” will now have no protection from “medical” interventions.
“I think the big thing you have to remember is that people think there’s no harm in these ‘treatments.’ I believe in the science,” he said, citing numerous studies that show the heightened suicide risk, depression and anxiety symptoms, and other health problems that result from “cross-sex” hormones, medications, and surgeries.
McConkey said promoting transitions needs to be treated like a crime, since “transition healthcare” irrevocably harms children.
“I believe they need to start arresting any person who starts promoting transition like pills or surgeries. I know that’s controversial but they’re talking about arresting people for less,” he said.
