Former speechwriter for President Trump and Catholic convert Alec Torres joined LOOPcast to discuss his new book Persecuted from Within.
Throughout the interview, Torres emphasized the need to defend the truth even within the Catholic Church even if it’s perceived as being “non-affirming”:
Frankly, it’s the most unkind thing in the world to affirm these people in their sin because you’re affirming them straight to hell.

Speechwriting for Trump
Torres said that the art of speechwriting has changed greatly over the years. Speeches – especially for large personalities like Donald Trump – are expected to be big spectacles. The most memorable speeches are still those that say “something that’s very, very profound in a way that is also extremely simple,” Torres said.
Personal Sacrifice for His Family
After working in Washington, D.C. for many years, Torres moved with his family to Texas. He explained the impact leaving D.C. had on his career but also how beneficial the move has been for his family. The Catholic understanding of sacrifice helped Torres to see that, “Every single choice that we make, every single good that we choose requires a sacrifice.”

Turmoil in the Church
Torres decided to write Persecuted from Within after he could not find resources to help him learn how to respond to the turbulence in the Church. He used his experience writing speeches to write a book that he hopes states profound truths simply.
Throughout the process of writing the book, Torres learned that human concupiscence has always been and will always be a reality in the Church.
He advises: “More than anything, pray that God would give you the grace to endure and to see these things with heavens’ eyes,” and take inspiration from the lives of the saints.
