CV NEWS FEED // On August 8, Ohioans will vote on a proposed amendment to their state constitution. The amendment, known as Issue 1, will require future constitutional amendments to pass with 60% of the vote.
Currently, only a simple 50%+1 majority vote of the general public is required to pass an amendment to the state’s constitution. Ohio has one of the most lenient constitutional amendment processes in the country.
Why is the 50%+1 threshold a problem?
The 50%+1 threshold permits well-funded leftist groups like Planned Parenthood to funnel millions of dollars into Ohio and force their radical agenda items in amendments to the state constitution.
One such amendment is the Reproductive Rights Amendment for Ballot in November 2023, which was drafted by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Ohio. It declares that “every individual has the right to make and carry out one’s own reproductive decisions.” The vague language applies to contraception, fertility treatment, miscarriage care and abortion, and includes children in its definition of “individual”.
“This amendment is too extreme for Ohio,” said Logan Church, director of CatholicVote Ohio. “As part of its unrelenting attack on parents, the ACLU’s proposed amendment seeks to cut parents out of their child’s most important and life-altering health decisions – including abortions and so-called sex change operations.”
“On top of that, the amendment would nullify existing and future health and safety protection for women and permit abortions in Ohio through all nine months of pregnancy, well after the point at which the unborn child can feel pain,” Church added.
Planned Parenthood is a sponsor of the amendment. The organization used deceptive advertising and fraudulent means of collecting signatures to get the Reproductive Rights Amendment on the Ohio ballot in 2023.
For Ohioans, voting “yes” on Issue 1 will make it much harder for the ACLU’s amendment to make it onto the ballot.
“Issue 1 must pass to defend the values of the good people of Ohio – and the American principle that our government is of the people, by the people, and for the people. The constitution belongs to us, not to Planned Parenthood,” said Brian Burch, president of CatholicVote.
What if the August 8 ballot initiative fails?
If Issue 1 fails and the threshold is not raised to 60%, the Reproductive Rights Amendment will be on the ballot in 2023. Should that amendment pass, abortion will be legal in Ohio throughout all nine months of pregnancy.
Additionally, not only will full-term abortions be legalized, but minors will also be able to obtain abortions and mutilating “trans” surgeries without their parents’ consent.
What can we do?
CatholicVote SUPPORTS the crucial August 8 amendment. CatholicVote will help defend the values of the good people of Ohio and prevent woke organizations from dominating state politics.
On August 8, Ohioans must vote “YES” on Issue 1. Early voting began July 11.

“The good people of Ohio are voting on a measure that could change the course of their state’s – and our nation’s – history,” Burch said. “What happens in Ohio will have nationwide impact.”
