CV NEWS FEED // A new mosaic depicting Mary Queen of Peace dressed in a traditional Korean hanbok has been inaugurated in the Vatican Gardens, according to a September 22 report from AsiaNews.
The report shared that the mosaic is located in the Bastione Maestro of the Vatican Gardens, joining other Marian images from 11 countries. The Madonna’s hanbok features red and turquoise colors, symbolizing motherhood and peace, respectively. The Infant Jesus in her arms also wears traditional Korean clothing.
Artist Shim Soon-hwa Catherine created the mosaic after initially painting the image on canvas, according to the report. Shim noted that her work was inspired by prayers for those affected by war, asking for peace through the intercession of Mary.
The blessing ceremony for the mosaic took place on September 20, coinciding with the feast of St. Andrew Kim and other Korean martyrs, according to the report.
Cardinal Fernando Vérgez Alzaga, President of the Commission of the Vatican City State, presided over the event, which over 200 people attended.
According to AsiaNews, Cardinal Alzaga prayed at the blessing of the mosaic that “All those who pass in front of the image of Our Lady of Korea will remember Korea and pray that peace in the Korean Peninsula may be achieved through the intercession of Our Lady of Peace.”
Prefect of the Dicastery for the Clergy Cardinal Lazarus You Heung-sik also attended the ceremony, along with Korean bishops visiting Rome for their ad limina meetings.
According to AsiaNews, Cardinal You Heung-sik proposed the installation of the Korean image in the Vatican Gardens and received approval from Pope Francis in May 2023.
