CV NEWS FEED // Church bells across the United States are set to ring in unison Dec. 7 to celebrate the reopening of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, five years after it suffered devastating fire damage.
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has extended an invitation to Catholic churches nationwide to participate in this momentous occasion as a “gesture of unity” scheduled for 2 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.
In an X post, the USCCB expressed the significance of Notre-Dame, stating, “Please join us in celebrating the reopening of this iconic cathedral that holds a special place in the hearts of all believers and people of goodwill worldwide.”
Notre-Dame Cathedral, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture, suffered a devastating fire April 15, 2019, while undergoing renovations. The blaze caused the collapse of its spire and inflicted severe damage to its wooden roof and upper walls.
The ceremony marking the reopening of the Cathedral will occur Dec. 7. It will begin with Paris Archbishop Laurent Ulrich knocking on the doors of the cathedral with his staff, which will prompt the historic organ to begin playing.
President of the USCCB Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio said that the ringing of church bells across the U.S. will be “one more sign of our union to the eldest daughter of the Church whose forefathers contributed so much to the U.S. struggle for Independence.”
