CV NEWS FEED // Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio issued a statement May 8 thanking God for the election of Pope Leo XIV on behalf of the US Catholic bishops.
“In my lifetime, the Church has been blessed with a series of popes each uniquely prepared for his particular moment in history yet sharing a common mission to proclaim the ageless truth of the Gospel,” the president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) wrote.
Archbishop Broglio added that he rejoiced in the newly elected Bishop of Rome’s broad international experience since Pope Leo has ministered in Peru, Rome, and the United States.
“Certainly, we rejoice that a son of this Nation has been chosen by the cardinals, but we recognize that he now belongs to all Catholics and to all people of good will,” Archbishop Broglio continued. “His words advocating peace, unity, and missionary activity already indicate a path forward.”
The archbishop offered prayers that the Holy Father will experience peace in his ministry and lead as a wise shepherd.
Pope Leo XIV, a Chicago native and an Augustinian priest with dual citizenship in the US and Peru, was elected May 8 by the College of Cardinals.
