CV NEWS FEED // President Donald Trump signed an executive order Feb. 5 banning men from participating in women’s sports in schools, universities, and athletic associations.
“You’ve been waiting a long time for this,” the President said. “So have I.”
He noted that the new executive order is “all about common sense.”
“Under the Trump administration we will defend the proud tradition of female athletes,” he said. “And we will not allow men to beat up, injure, and cheat our women and our girls. From now on, women’s sports will be only for women.”
Trump noted several examples of men competing as women who “broke records” that rightfully belonged to women, including Imane Khalif, a male boxer who won the Gold Medal at the Olympics in women’s boxing.
The president thanked the Congress members, state attorneys, and governors who fought to keep men out of women’s sports.
ABC News reports that the “Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports” executive order will call for immediate enforcement. The document states that Title IX protections do not permit men to participate in women’s sports.
The executive order instructs state attorneys to enforce the new mandate. Universities that do not comply could lose federal funding and face legal action.
“If schools don’t comply, it’s not just that they’re at risk of DOJ-based actions,” deputy assistant to the president and senior policy strategist May Mailman told ABC News. “Title Nine has a private right of action component behind it, so if schools are violating the law, they’re at risk of lawsuits from their female students, that is going to actually be more than just taking away federal funding. These are multi-million dollar lawsuits.”
According to ABC News, the document also calls private sporting bodies to attend a meeting at the White House where women who were harmed by the presence of men on their sports teams will share their stories and instructs the Secretary of State to encourage the International Olympics Committee to prevent men from competing against women.
The signing ceremony included more than 60 attendees, including women’s sports activist Riley Gaines.
