CV NEWS FEED // This week Donald Trump commemorated the martyrdom of Father Jerzy Popiełuszko in one of many recent nods he has made to the Catholic faith during his presidential campaign.
In an October 16 post on his X account, the former President wrote that October 19 will be the 40th anniversary of Father Popiełuszko’s martyrdom. He described Father Popiełuszko as “a truly great Catholic priest, who was the source of tremendous spiritual strength for the Polish Solidarity Movement and, indeed, the entire nation of Poland, in the 1980s.”
He continued, “Yesterday, in Chicago, I was honored to sign a Commemoration about this solemn anniversary and present it to Father Jerzy’s nephew, Marek Popiełuszko, as well as receive from him a book of Father Jerzy’s sermons and other beautiful mementos to remember the life of this extraordinary man of heroic virtue.”
On the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Trump posted an image of Our Lady of Guadalupe to his X account along with the caption, “Happy Birthday Mary!” He has also posted the St. Michael’s prayer to his social media accounts.
The former President has also arranged to have the Ave Maria sung on stops during his campaign, including at his second rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, after a moment of solemn silence for Corey Comperatore, the victim of the shots in the attempted assassination in July.
Trump, as CatholicVote previously reported, has also vowed to protect Christians from targeting by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Department of Justice (DOJ).
“A new report from the House Judiciary Committee proves that the Biden FBI actually targeted Catholics as potential ‘domestic terrorists’ — do you believe this?” Trump stated. “And you know, evangelicals will not be far behind. Once it starts, it starts happening on a very major scale.”
“When I am back in the White House, never again will your government be used to target Christians and other religious believers,” he emphasized.
A recent poll has shown that Trump is in the lead among Catholics in seven swing states in the race against Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris.
