In other words, it’s great.
I have no idea if there were cynical or divisive motives on the part of the Obama administration to put Harriet Tubman on the $20 bill. But I have no doubt there were plenty on the Left who were secretly hoping it would provoke a negative response from conservatives. You know, because we’re all racists.
Well, fail.
In fact, Harriet Tubman is a great choice for the the $20 bill, and quite frankly when it comes to her values, she’s about as close to an American icon as the modern American conservative could hope to find.
Besides her heroic work freeing slaves through the Underground Railroad, Harriet Tubman was also a woman of intense faith, whose deeply held religious beliefs served as the very motive for her work helping bring slaves to freedom.
Oh, and she carried a gun. What’s not to like?
One almost wonders if more than a few people on the Left, when they actually learn more about the great woman they hoped to use as a political wedge, will quietly fume that they were somehow tricked into their own bigoted stupidity.
Harriet Tubman, you’re an American hero. We’re looking forward to seeing you more often.
