CV NEWS FEED // The Vatican this week announced that the next International Eucharistic Congress will take place in Sydney, Australia, in 2028.
The announcement of the next host city was given during the conclusion of the 2024 Congress, which was hosted in Quito, Ecuador, according to a September 16 report from Catholic Weekly.
Archbishop Anthony Fisher OP of Sydney said, according to Catholic Weekly: “It is my hope that in hosting the International Eucharistic Congress we might renew the sense of solemnity, mystery, welcome and joy in the liturgical life of our city, revitalise our Christian lives, and increase our outreach to those most in need.”
This year’s celebration marked the 53rd Congress, a multi-day event that takes place every four years. According to the Congress webpage, Eucharistic Congresses “are an expression of a particular veneration and love of the Universal Church for the Eucharistic Mystery, source of fraternity and peace.”
“An International Eucharistic Congress aims to make known, love and better serve Our Lord Jesus Christ in his Eucharistic Mystery, the center of life and the mission to heal the wounds of the world,” it adds.
According to a press release from the Congress, Bishop Andrew Cozzens of the Diocese of Crookston, Minnesota, gave an address on the third day of the International Congress, where he emphasized the transformative power of the Eucharist, which can bring about healing in a broken world.
In July, Bishop Cozzens led prayer during the opening event at the National Eucharistic Congress in Indianapolis, Indiana. As CatholicVote reported, he prayed for unity, healing, and spiritual renewal.
