On the 14th anniversary of South Sudan’s independence, Bishop Eduardo Hiboro Kussala issued a message urging citizens to recognize their shared mission of renewal and to live as a people “empowered by grace.”
“On this glorious day of our national birth, we lift our hearts in gratitude to God, the Author of history and the Giver of every good gift,” wrote Bishop Kussala, who leads the Diocese of Tombura-Yambio, in a message published by Agenzia Fides July 9.
South Sudan became an independent nation July 9, 2011, following a referendum that overwhelmingly favored separation from Sudan. Independence ended decades of violence and persecution under the Islamist government in Khartoum, which targeted Christians, burned churches, and banned public expressions of faith.

“As we celebrate our Independence Day, let us remember: true freedom is not only the lifting of chains, but the awakening of purpose to build, to reconcile, and to renew,” Bishop Kussala said. “We are not merely survivors of struggle — we are bearers of a sacred mission.”
He urged South Sudanese people to see themselves as called to serve, with divine help.
“Each citizen is empowered by grace, equipped with divine gifts, and called to be a light in our communities,” he wrote. “You are not alone. The same Spirit that brought us this far still walks with us — guiding, comforting, and calling us forward.”
Bishop Kussala also called on the citizens to show courage and commitment in daily life.
“Let us not just wave flags but raise hearts full of courage, hands ready to serve, and voices that speak peace, truth, and love.”
Bishop Kussala closed his message with a call to responsibility and solidarity.
“Our future is not a dream — it is a task,” he said. “We are a people anointed by hope, strengthened by suffering, and sent forth to heal our broken land together.”
