Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and Rep. Chris Smith, R-N.J., introduced matching resolutions June 3 to designate June as “Life Month,” commemorating the Supreme Court’s June 24, 2022, decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
“Every human life is worthy of protection, and it is especially incumbent upon Americans and lawmakers to protect the most vulnerable among us,” Cruz said in a statement announcing the proposal. “Designating June as Life Month is a recommitment to the American principle that every life has dignity. I call on my colleagues in the Senate to swiftly pass this resolution.”
Backed by 28 Republican senators, the resolution seeks to reframe June — typically recognized as “Pride Month” — as a time to honor unborn life and celebrate the court’s decision to return abortion law to the states. Smith introduced a companion resolution in the House.
The resolution affirms “the right to life is a fundamental truth enshrined in the Declaration of Independence,” adding that “every human life is inherently precious, has equal dignity and worth, and deserves legal protection.”
Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., a co-sponsor, said the resolution reflects the pro-life momentum now driving the Republican Party.
“If we are going to dedicate entire months to recognizing every group under the sun, the least we can do is dedicate June to protecting the most vulnerable among us,” Tuberville said. “Now that Republicans control the White House, Senate, and House, we have to send a strong message: Republicans are the party that stands up for life.”
CatholicVote strongly endorsed the resolution, joining a coalition of national pro-life groups in support, including Susan B. Anthony (SBA) Pro-Life America, National Right to Life, Students for Life, and Alliance Defending Freedom.
“June 2022 was a turning point in American history, marking the moment when the Supreme Court corrected its error and finally overturned Roe v. Wade,” said CatholicVote Vice President Joshua Mercer. “We don’t need a month to celebrate ‘pride.’ We need a month to celebrate life. Senator Ted Cruz, who has been a champion of the unborn, is right that we should celebrate the end of a tragic chapter in our history.”
Pro-life leaders say the resolution signals a growing national resolve to support women, children, and families while advancing protections for the unborn.
“The landmark Dobbs victory rightly restored power to protect unborn children in the law to the people and their elected representatives,” said Marilyn Musgrave, SBA Pro-Life’s vice president of governmental affairs. “Thank you, Sen. Cruz and Rep. Smith, for your resolution that celebrates this pivotal moment and underscores the need to protect every life and support women, children and families across our nation — not only for the June anniversary of Dobbs but year-round.”
