CV NEWS FEED // A recent security breach to the school software company PowerSchool gave hackers access to the personal information of potentially millions of students and teachers across the country, the company recently announced.
Bleeping Computers reported that PowerSchool announced to customers Jan. 7 that it became aware of the cyber attack Dec. 28. They stated that not all customers were affected. The breach gave access to contact information like names and addresses of students and teachers, and possibly more sensitive information like social security numbers and medical information. The company is offering credit monitoring for adults whose information was hacked, and identity protection services for affected minors.
Bleeping Computers added that in a FAQ session with customers, PowerSchool stated that the breach was not a ransomware attack but the company paid the hackers to stop them from releasing the stolen information.
The breach affected schools across the United States and Canada, including Catholic schools in the Diocese of Green Bay, Catholic schools in the Diocese of Evansville, Indiana, St. Hubert Catholic High School for Girls in Pennsylvania, and various Catholic schools in Ontario, Canada.
