CV NEWS FEED // The Archdiocese of San Francisco has announced a new, free online course led by author Joseph Pearce that will explore classic literary works including those by Dante Alighieri and J.R.R. Tolkien.
The course is designed to be a “joyful pilgrimage” through literary works significant to the Catholic faith, according to the San Francisco Archdiocese website. The six-week series will begin Feb. 25, where attendees will study literary works by Tolkien, Dante, Shakespeare, and Jane Austen, among others.
The archdiocesan website explains that study will also explore the cultural significance of notable literary works in connection to universal truths within the most important narrative, the Story of Salvation.
“This is what great literature does: it transcends the mundane, opening our hearts and minds to beauty, goodness, and truth. It invites us to see the world and ourselves in the light of the divine Storyteller, God himself,” the website states.
The first theme of the online course will be “The Virgin Muse: Classical Epic and Tragedy.”
Pearce is an internationally recognized author and evangelist. He is the visiting chair of Catholic Studies at Thomas More College of Liberal Arts, according to his website.
“My hope is that we will appreciate together the splendor to be found in great literature,” he says about the course on his website, emphasizing his mission of sharing the gift of literary art with others.
The classes will occur every Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. PST. More information on the course is available here.
