CV NEWS FEED// A Republican congressman has introduced legislation that would protect surrogate mothers and the unborn children that they carry.
A press release from the Congressman, Andy Ogles (TN-05) explains that the bill would forbid federal courts from enforcing a surrogacy contract that requires a surrogate mother to abort the unborn child. It also forbids the intended parents from withholding payment if the surrogate mother refuses to have an abortion.
The bill defines abortion as using any means “to intentionally kill the unborn child of a woman known to be pregnant.”
Ogles stated that, “It is barbaric that there are laws on the books in some states that go so far as to require surrogate mothers to have abortions against their will. Abortions are dangerous, and forced abortions are traumatizing to the mental and physical health of women. It is not only pro-life but pro-woman to stop forced abortions.”
The bill has 12 co-sponsors, and it is publicly supported by CatholicVote, Heritage Action, Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, National Right to Life Committee, Family Research Council, Concerned Women for America Legislative Action Committee, Americans United For Life, Family Policy Alliance, Students For Life Action, March for Life, and Ethics & Public Policy Center’s HHS Accountability Project.
