CV NEWS FEED // Amid a slew of executive orders signed by President Donald Trump in the two weeks he has occupied the White House, his orders relating to border control and immigration appear to be the most well-received, according to RealClearPolling.
A late January poll found that the most popular executive order was to deploy the U.S. military to secure the southern border, with 57% supporting the move and 34% opposing it. Trump’s order speeding up the deportation of illegal immigrants also received large amounts of support, with 54% approving and 35% disapproving. His third immigration-related order ending birthright citizenship for the children of illegal immigrants was met with more support than opposition as well, with 48% approving and 41% disapproving.
The poll also asked respondents about their thoughts on several other executive orders. Two more that were largely supported included Trump’s requirement of federal workers to return to full-time, in-person work and his ban on federal funding for gender identity programs, including his order to recognize only biological sex. The federal workers order was supported by 56% and opposed by 29%, whereas his gender identity order was met with 54% approval and 35% opposition.
In addition, the poll found that just three of Trump’s executive orders garnered more opposition than support. Respondents were most disapproving of his pardoning of those imprisoned for their involvement in the Jan. 6, 2021 riots, with 51% opposing it and just 37% approving. According to RealClearPolling, only 60% of Republicans approved of the move.
Respondents largely disapproved of the order pulling the U.S. out of the World Health Organization (WHO) (46% vs. 38% approving). RealClearPolitics reported that Trump tried to leave the WHO in 2020, but as the withdrawal process takes a full year, he left office before succeeding. Former president Joe Biden then canceled the withdrawal.
The third executive order respondents disapproved of was Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement, with 41% opposing the move and 39% supporting it.
However, RealClearPolling noted that Trump’s job approval has remained positive during his first two weeks in office, as he currently sits at a 49.4% approval and 44.8% disapproval rating.
