CV NEWS FEED // As Arizona’s Senate prepares to vote on whether to repeal a pro-life law, the result depends on two “traitorous” Republican senators, according to pro-life leader Samuel Green.
Green, president and general counsel of pro-life organization Reason for Life, wrote in a commentary for the Arizona Capitol Times, “All eyes are on Senators Shawnna Bolick and Thomas ‘T.J.’ Shope.”
“They must decide whether to continue in their deadly treachery or hold true to their prior public proclamation that they support ‘prohibiting abortion except when it is necessary to prevent the death of the mother,’” he added.
CatholicVote previously reported that the Arizona Supreme Court decided on April 9 to reinstate a 160-year-old pro-life law that effectively bans abortions in the state. The decision was surprisingly blasted by Republican state lawmakers, and a repeal effort was introduced.
The repeal effort passed in the state House on April 24 after three of the House’s 31 Republicans joined all 29 Democratic representatives in voting against the pro-life legislation.
Republicans hold a 16-14 advantage in the state Senate. If Bolick and Shope decide to join the Democratic senators as they vote to uphold or repeal the pro-life law, protecting life in Arizona could become significantly more challenging.
Green wrote that though the pro-life legislation is indeed from 160 years ago, its essence was re-embraced by the state legislature through similarly protective laws in 2021 and 2022. He added that both Bolick and Shope voted for the pro-life laws in both years.
“It’s not too late for Bolick and Shope … to do what is right and courageously defend unborn children’s right to life at this critical moment,” he continued. “If they choose instead to betray their voters and the children they were elected to defend, the harm will be incalculable. They will effectively sentence to death thousands of precious, innocent children.”
“Rarely does one’s decision mean life or death for thousands,” Green concluded. “But those are the stakes as Bolick, Shope, and their Senate colleagues deliberate. May they choose life.”
