CV NEWS FEED // Citing Biblical stories of God working through imperfect people, the president of the National Black Pro-Life Union recently explained why she supports Donald Trump even amid his shortcomings and imperfections.
Day Gardner wrote in a statement published Aug. 13 on Christian News Wire that several people have asked her how she can support Trump as a Christian.
Gardner wrote that when someone “says Trump has had several wives and is a womanizer,” she recalls King David from the Old Testament, who committed adultery and intentionally sent the woman’s husband to die in battle.
“Even though King David was an adulterer and murderer (by proxy) God still chose him to fulfil the covenant,” Gardner wrote. “He is one of the greatest leaders of God’s people in the Old Testament.”
“Unlike King David, Donald Trump is not a murderer. Whatever his relationships have been with wives or others is not my concern,” she continued. “I do find it quite interesting that many of the people throwing stones at Trump for past relationships still hold former President’s Bill Clinton and John F. Kennedy, (his brothers) and others in high regard.”
She also recalled St. Paul, who, before his conversion, persecuted Christians, and Rahab, a former prostitute who had a role in the overthrowing of Jericho and is in the lineage of Christ.
Gardner wrote that it is “easier to see the sins of those who are famous, especially with today’s technology,” whereas for non-celebrities, one’s own sins and imperfections are not spotlighted in the same way.
She also shared that she has “heard countless, wonderful stories about President Trump’s generosity and care for friends, employees and even strangers.” While he is not perfect, Gardner argued, she believes Trump “is a good man and a great leader.”
“I also believe GOD has HIS hand on him,” Gardner continued, later writing that “America thrived” during Trump’s first term as president despite daily challenges that arose against him.
Addressing the issue of Trump’s support of abortion in certain cases, Gardner wrote that she has “notic[ed] many Christians… state Trump is not pro life enough.”
“In truth, he isn’t,” she continued.
She shared that she has worked with pro-life groups for more than two decades to fight the federal government’s associations with the abortion industry.
Trump “has been the only president to take away at least some of the (Title X) federal funds that Planned Parenthood was receiving,” she pointed out, and he appointed the Supreme Court justices who later overturned Roe v. Wade.
“GOD uses imperfect people for HIS perfect will,” Gardner concluded. “As imperfect as he is, I believe God has HIS hand on President Donald J. Trump for such a time as this which should provide all people, Christians especially, with great hope. Together, in CHRIST.”
