Pope Leo XIV offered prayers June 29 for the victims of a devastating explosion and stampede at Barthélémy Boganda High School in Bangui, Central African Republic, where at least 29 students were killed and more than 250 injured during national exams.
Speaking from Saint Peter’s Square following his Angelus address on the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, the Holy Father paused to acknowledge the mourning community.
“I offer the assurance of my prayers for the Barthélémy Boganda High School community in Bangui, Central African Republic, which is in mourning following the tragic accident that caused numerous deaths and injuries among the students,” he said. “May the Lord comfort the families and the entire community!”
The tragedy unfolded June 25 during the baccalaureate exams of more than 5,000 students. According to reports, an electrical transformer malfunctioned and attempts to restore power triggered an explosion. The blast sparked widespread panic and a deadly stampede that caused most of its casualties.
Emergency crews responded quickly, rushing victims to local hospitals. The school remains closed as authorities investigate the cause and determine next steps.
While greeting pilgrims from around the world, the Pope also expressed ongoing concern for other global crises, reiterating his prayers for the people of Ukraine and calling for peace through dialogue.
“Sisters and brothers,” he concluded, “let us continue to pray that weapons may be silenced everywhere and that peace may be achieved through dialogue.”
