In a message sent to those convening in Hiroshima, Pope Francis first reiterated his June statement to the G7, and emphasized the distinction between machine-generated algorithmic choices and human decision-making rooted in wisdom and practical evaluation.
He warned against relinquishing decision-making to machines, stressing that human control over artificial intelligence is crucial to preserve human dignity and ensure a hopeful future.
“We need to ensure and safeguard a space for proper human control over the choices made by artificial intelligence programs,” he wrote. “Human dignity itself depends on it.”
Pope Francis highlighted the symbolic significance of convening in Hiroshima to discuss artificial intelligence and peace. Against the backdrop of ongoing global conflicts and growing concerns about this technology, he views the event in Hiroshima as exceptionally significant.
Additionally, Pope Francis emphasized the importance of recognizing that acknowledging diverse cultural and religious contributions in regulating artificial intelligence is crucial for successfully managing technological innovation wisely.
“In commending your initiative, I ask you to show the world that we are united in asking for a proactive commitment to protect human dignity in this new era of machines,” Pope Francis stated.
