CV NEWS FEED // Construction has begun in Konotopie, Poland, on what will become one of the world’s tallest religious statues: a 180-foot statue of the Virgin Mary.
The statue itself will stand 133.2 feet high and will rest on a 50-foot pedestal designed in the shape of a crown, the New York Post reported March 6. The pedestal will serve as an observation deck and a pilgrimage site.
The monument is being built near the Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Konotopie, where a figure of Our Lady of Sorrows has been venerated for years.
When completed, the Virgin Mary statue will be among the tallest Marian statues in the world, after a 328-foot Mother of All Asia statue in the Philippines, currently the tallest statue of Mary worldwide.
According to EuroNews, Polish billionaire Roman Karkosik and his wife, Grażyna, financed the project. The project is expected to be completed in approximately 18 months.
Poland is also home to the Christ the King statue in Świebodzin, a town in the western part of the country. Completed in 2010, the statue, including the mound on which it stands, reaches 172 feet. At the time of its unveiling, it was the tallest statue of Christ in the world.
