CV NEWS FEED // A report compiling several recent Pew Research Center surveys revealed Americans’ views on President Donald Trump and hot-button topics like the economy, immigration, Ukraine, and “transgender” policies.
Pew reported March 3 that economic issues are Americans’ biggest concern. One survey found that only 24% of Americans say the economy is “excellent” or “good,” while 45% considered it “fair” and 31% rated it as “poor.”
“These overall evaluations are essentially unchanged over the past year. But Republicans’ views of the economy have improved since the fall, while the opposite is true for Democrats,” Pew reported.
Pew also found that Republicans are more likely than Democrats to be optimistic about the future of the economy, with 73% of Republicans saying the economy will be better in a year and 64% of Democrats saying it will be worse.
Similar partisan divides occur in responses to questions about the future prices of food, gas, housing, and health care. However, the overall sample is not optimistic that prices will be better a year from now, with most generally projecting that prices will be a little or a lot worse.
The partisan gap occurs again in Americans’ views on immigration, with 73% of Republicans considering it a top issue and only 23% of Democrats agreeing. Despite their differing views, Pew found that across the board, 59% of total respondents support increasing deportations and 58% approve of sending more military to the U.S.-Mexico border. Other related measures, like redefining birthright citizenship, were met with less support, with only 43% approving and 56% disapproving.
Another poll revealed Americans’ reactions to Trump’s executive orders related to “transgender” individuals. Almost seven in 10 adults support laws that require athletes to compete on teams that match their true sex, and more than five in 10 favor laws that protect minors from getting “gender transition surgery.”
“These shares are up eight points and 10 points, respectively, since 2022. At the same time, 56% of Americans support policies aimed at protecting trans people from discrimination in jobs, housing and public spaces – though this share is down 8 points since 2022,” Pew noted.
An early February survey asked respondents about their thoughts on U.S.-Ukraine relations and the war with Russia. Thirty percent said that the U.S. is providing too much support to Ukraine, with 22% considering the current support insufficient and 23% viewing it as about right.
