CV NEWS FEED // The Pope sent legate Cardinal John Tong Hon to open Taiwan’s fifth National Eucharistic Congress on October 5.
Ecclesia in Asia reports that Cardinal Hon led the opening rites of the Congress.
“Through this, the Holy Father expressed his closeness to the Catholics of Taiwan,” the press release stated.
The event’s theme is “Fraternity heals everyone.” More than 10,000 Catholics from Taiwan are attending the conference at Kaohsiung Exhibition Center.
“Special attention was given to the Sacrament of Reconciliation, a sign of fraternity, which, as the theme suggests, is the only balm capable of healing the world,” the press release continued.
Cardinal Ton, the Bishop Emeritus of Hong Kong, also met with Taiwan’s Deputy Foreign Minister Tien Chung-kwang.
During the meeting, Cardinal Ton stated that “he was struck by how quickly Taiwanese society returned to normal after Typhoon Krathon.”
Krathon hit Taiwan shortly before the Congress; however, the press release states, “The catastrophe did not in any way dampen the spirit and enthusiasm of the Catholics who had gathered around the Eucharist that heals and gives life.”
Tien “stressed Taiwan’s respect for religious freedom and diversity in society” in his meeting with Cardinal Ton, and told him that the Vatican and Taiwan would “intensify their cooperation in the humanitarian field,” as Taiwan and the Vatican already have a positive relationship.
